The Conference on „Evolution of the Mental Picture of Tight Shales” was convened on March 28th and 29th, 2011, in the newly-opened Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw, Poland. It was organized and co-sponsored by ORLEN Upstream, Schlumberger Innovation Centre and the University of Utah’s Energy & Geoscience Institute. The Conference attracted 230 paticipants from 28 operating companies, consulting firms, and researchers from national institutions as well as faculty and students from Europesn universities. The Conference had the unique and challenging goal of defining the evolution of the mental picture of tight shales and tight shale plays. Tight shales emerged as important hydrocarbon resources in North America nearly a decade ago. Field oparations have been transformed by these new plays, and new methods are continously being tested to reduce costs and improve production. The success achieved has been impressive; so much so this remarkable transformation is reflected in oversupply and drastic reduction in North America gas pricing.
